Pilot killed in Athens plane crash

A plane crash in Athens killed a pilot Wednesday night.
 
A Piper PA-24 went down around 7 p.m. east of Athens-Ben Epps Airport. Officers with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department found the plane in a wooded area between Buddy Christian Way and Cherokee Road.
 
The pilot was the only occupant and was found deceased. According to a preliminary report from the Federal Aviation Administration, the pilot had reported engine problems.
 
The pilot has not yet been identified. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
