Log pile on fire causes Buford Highway to close temporarily

A large fire on the side of the road in Suwanee alerted emergency crews Monday evening. According to Gwinnett Fire & Emergency Services, around 8:02 p.m. a 911 caller said that there was a log pile on fire near the intersection of Buford Highway and Suwanee Dam Road.

When emergency crews arrived, flames were already as high as 30 feet in the air. The closest water supply was a hydrant located on the opposite side of Buford Highway. The road had to be closed from Cherokee Trail to Suwanee Dam Road for water supply operations.

Buford Highway was reopened at 10:15 p.m. but fire crews remained on scene for several more hours suppressing hot spots within the log pile. There were no injuries reported and no structures were damaged.

The report says that the fire was initially determined to be accidental in nature.
