OAKWOOD, Ga. — Gary Compton has been hired to lead the Johnson boys basketball program, athletic director Tony Wagner announced Monday afternoon.

Compton will take over for Chris Guthrie, who is retiring at the end of the current school year.

In a release, Compton said he was honored to be chosen as the next head boys coach at the Oakwood school.

“I am very appreciative and thankful for the trust the administration has placed in me," he said. "I am also extremely excited to have the opportunity to continue working with the young men here at Johnson High School. I have a great amount of admiration and respect for the coaches who have come before me, and I look forward to making them, the community, and most importantly the school and the team, proud. We will work hard to carry on with the tradition to build character, integrity, and an intense work ethic in the program.”

Compton has assisted Guthrie over the last two seasons, and prior to that, served as an assistant girls coach at Winder-Barrow. He also was the head girls coach at Apalachee High School in Winder from 2008 to 2012.

Wagner said Compton is a "man of high integrity who represents our Knights' Creed."

“He is a humble man who constantly pours into our young people, both in the classroom and in the arena of athletics," Wagner said. "During his time at Johnson, he has demonstrated his love for his ala mater and for our students and our community. Our student-athletes have responded well to his coaching and mentoring these past two years, both in basketball and football. We are very excited that coach Compton will be leading our Boys Basketball program.”

“While we have had the pleasure to work with Coach Compton over the past few years, we are excited to have him take the helm as head coach of our Boys Basketball program” stated Principal Jonathan Edwards. “He is a relationship-builder, and he shares in our vision of developing student athletes of character here at JHS.  Coach Compton has the experience and work ethic necessary for the continued growth and development of our basketball program, and we look forward to the future under Coach Compton’s leadership.”
