Man struck and killed while outside vehicle in Homer

A man adjusting the load on a utility trailer he was towing was struck and killed by another vehicle near Homer about 5 p.m. Thursday.

The fatal crash happened on the Ga. 15 / U.S. 441 northbound bridge between Windmill Farm Road and McCoy Bridge Road.

According to Sgt. 1st Class D.A. Rathel of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 Gainesville, the driver who was killed had stopped his vehicle on the right shoulder with its emergency flashers on.

The driver of the other vehicle involved failed to maintain her lane, traveled off the roadway onto the right shoulder, striking the trailer and the driver that was outside the vehicle, Rathel said. The driver who was outside died at the scene.

The female driver was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

The Banks County Coroner’s Office is in the process of notifying the next of kin, Rathel said.

The Specialized Crash Reconstruction Teams is assisting with the investigation.

More details will be released after the next of kin has been notified.

The highway was shut down for about three hours following the wreck.
