A Johnson High School student was hospitalized on Friday after he was allegedly physically assaulted by a fellow student at the school.
The Hall County Sheriff's Office said in a press release Joshua Lionel Jackson, 17, of Flowery Branch, allegedly committed the assault just after 1:30 p.m. against a 15-year-old boy.
Jackson is accused of picking up the victim from behind and slamming him to the concrete floor of the classroom. The victim's head hit the floor in the incident, causing him to go unconscious and suffer a seizure. Jackson then allegedly continued punching the unconscious victim. The victim regained consciousness and was taken to the hospital due to the nature of his injuries.
Hall County Schools spokesman Stan Lewis said in an update Wednesday afternoon that school officials were made aware of the seizure when it happened on Friday. However, they did not learn about the assault until Saturday.
Jackson is charged with felony aggravated battery. He also faces a charge of misdemeanor simple battery for slapping the same victim about a half-hour before the assault took place.
Jackson was arrested on Monday and remained in the Hall County Jail awaiting a first court appearance as of Wednesday morning.
"This type of behavior is a direct violation of the Hall County School District’s student code of conduct," a statement from the Hall County School District reads. "Students who engage in this type of behavior are disciplined accordingly."
Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the day on which school officials learned about the seizure.
