A Clarkesville man faces drug and other charges following an incident in which he allegedly threated law enforcement officers Monday night.
Charles Phillip Hunter was arrested after deputies responded to a dispute between neighbors in the 1200 block of Robertson Loop Road in Clarkesville around 10 p.m.
But that arrest was not immediate and followed a brief standoff and a lengthy manhunt on the northern end of Robertson Loop Road.
“Essentially, Mr. Hunter went next door to knock on the door and his neighbor asked him to return home,” said Habersham County Sheriff’s Investigator Kevin Angell. “When he did, he started breaking windows, which led to them calling 9-1-1. Our officers, when they responded, tried to make contact with Mr. Hunter and he became aggressive and said that he was going to shoot at our officers.”
Angell says officers immediately retreated to cover after hearing the threat and, while waiting for back-up officers to arrive, Hunter fled the home on foot into nearby woods.
K-9 units from Banks County Sheriff’s Office and Lee Arrendale State Prison responded to track Hunter while other officers set up a perimeter to keep Hunter contained.
Ultimately, a Georgia State Patrol helicopter led officers on the ground to Hunter, who is charged with two counts each of simple assault and terroristic threats and acts, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance, bringing contraband across guard lines, and obstruction or hindering of a law enforcement officer.
