Tennis playoffs: Buford, North Hall teams sweep into Sweet 16

GAINESVILLE —The North Hall boys and girls took wins at home on Tuesday in the opening round of the Class 3A state tennis playoffs.

The North Hall boys got a sweep in doubles to beat Sandy Creek 3-1 at the North Hall Courts.

The Trojans got wins from Clay Martin and Luis Delgado at No. 1 doubles and Stephen Sartain and Jaycob Wagner at No. 2 doubles. Austin Copper at No. 2 singles provided the deciding win.

North Hall, the No. 2 seed from region 7-3A, next will travel to Region 1-3A champion Brantley County in the Sweet 16. A day and time has yet to be determined.

The North Hall girls also advanced with a dominant 5-0 win over Carver-Atlanta.

The Lady Trojans did not drop a set in the match. Ella Kate Canaday, Gabbie Jenkins, and Lilly Perry got wins in singles. The doubles teams of Riley Morgan and Kayla Miller and Callie Clarke and Madilyn Dye also won.

The North Hall girls will play host to Brantley County on Friday at 3 p.m. in the sweet 16.


BUFORD TEAMS SWEEP INTO 2nd ROUND

The Buford girls defeated a tough Wheeler team 3-2 while the boys knocked off Lassiter 4-1 at Buford City Park to advance to the Sweet 16 in Class 6A.

For the girls, Taylor Aycock outlasted her opponent in a grueling 3 1/2-hour, three-set match to clinch the playoff win. Berkeley Clark at No. 2 singles and the doubles pair of Kylie Mccammon and Delaney Richards also got wins for the Lady Wolves.  

The Buford boys got the clincher from Leyton Grothe in a straight-set victory in singles. The Wolves swept the singles as Dean Kingsley and James Troutt also won. Matthew Maurer and Luke Clark got a win in doubles.

The girls improved to 18-3 on the season and will play host to Effingham County in the second round on a date yet to be determined.

The boys also are 18-3 on the season and will play host to Statesboro in the second round on a date yet to be determined.


In other first round playoff action for Northeast Georgia-area tennis teams, in Class 6A the Habersham Central boys dropped a 3-0 decision to Kell at home and the Jefferson girls lost 4-1 to Marist in Class 4A. In Class 3A, the Lumpkin County boys fell 5-0 to Westminster while the Lady Indians lost 4-0 to Greater Atlanta Christian.

In Class 2A, the Banks County girls took a 3-0 win over Elite Scholars at home sweeping the doubles and getting a win at No. 3 singles. The Rabun County boys lost 4-1 to Lovett.
