Duluth man shot and killed by police was a suspect in an earlier shooting

A Duluth man was shot and killed by police on Wednesday after authorities say he was in a shootout with an officer earlier in the week.

On Sunday, Demarco Mauge, 20, of Duluth, is suspected of firing at an off-duty officer working security near Cumberland Mall in Cobb County. The officer was patrolling the area when he received information to be on the lookout for two suspicious vehicles. When he saw the vehicles, he attempted to speak with the driver, but the driver began recklessly driving through the lot, shot at officers, and fled the area. The officer was not injured.

According to the Gwinnett Daily Post, on Wednesday, at approximately 5 p.m., police tried to pull over a Toyota Rav 4 on Chastain Road bridge over Interstate 75 in Kennesaw.

During the stop, Mauge, who was sitting in the passenger seat, displayed a handgun. Multiple officers shot at Mauge. He was declared dead at the scene.

According to police, Mauge matched the description of the Cumberland Mall suspect. The pistol he was carrying also matched the crime scene from earlier in the week.

The GBI has been called in to conduct an investigation of the incident.
