Baseball: Tech knocks off No. 2 Virginia

By AccessWDUN Staff

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  Zach Maxwell struck out six in four innings of gutsy shutdown baseball as No. 21 Georgia Tech baseball upended No. 2 Virginia, 6-4, for its first home loss of the season on Friday night at Disharoon Park.

The Yellow Jackets (17-9, 5-5 ACC) went to Maxwell (2-0) in the sixth in a bases-loaded, no-out jam and the hard-throwing righty struck out two-straight before shortstop Jadyn Jackson made a circus catch fading into the outfield to get out of the inning. Maxwell then took the Jackets home in 62 pitches, allowing just one hit total.

At the plate, Georgia Tech jumped the Cavaliers (23-3, 7-3 ACC) early, scoring four runs in the first two innings and six in the first four. Kevin Parada obliterating a two-run homer in the sixth to give him two hits and three RBI on the night. Tres Gonzalez also finished with two hits and an RBI, while Colin Hall drove in a run and Jackson smacked a triple.

Virginia were led by Alex Tappen, who finished 2-for-4 with an RBI double. Starter LHP Nate Savino (4-1) took his first loss of the year, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in four innings.

The Yellow Jackets remain in Charlottesville for Game 2 on Saturday, April 2. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra and WREK 91.1 FM.
