Three Lawrenceville men sentenced in $5 million drug bust

Three Lawrenceville men have been sentenced on drug charges.

Antonio Jefferson Guzman, Jose Salvador Herrera-Guzman and Guzman Rodriguez were stopped by Lawrenceville police officers in Aug. 2018. Police found 22 kilos of fentanyl in the backseat, according to a press release from the Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson.

That discovery led to a search of the three men's home on Beebloom Lane where more than 400 grams of cocaine and seven kilos of heroin were also found. Those drugs have an estimated value of more than $5 million. The agents also located almost $800,000 in cash, as well as other evidence of drug trafficking.

In 2018 when the crime originally happened, the AJC reported the drugs came from one of seven Mexican cartels working in metro Atlanta.

Guzman Rodriguez pled guilty prior to trial and was sentenced to 40 years with the first 25 years in confinement.

The State proceeded to trial on Guzman and Herrera-Guzman. After a weeklong trial, the jury convicted Jose Salvador Herrera Guzman of possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute. He was sentenced to 20 years with the first 12 years to be served in confinement.

The jury found Antonio Jefferson Guzman guilty of possession of a controlled substance, and he was sentenced to 10 years with 35 months in confinement.
