A new principal was announced Wednesday for East Jackson Comprehensive High School, following what school officials called a "thorough interview process."

Dr. Matt Stratemeyer will take over the position at the end of the school year, following in the footsteps of the retiring Chanda Palmer.

Stratemeyer has served as the Assistant Principal of Mountain View High School since 2016. He began his teaching career at Peachtree Ridge High School, where he was a social studies teacher, basketball coach, and interim athletic director.

“I hope the East Jackson High School community will join me in welcoming Dr. Matt Stratemeyer,” said Dr. Philip Brown, the incoming Superintendent for the Jackson County School System, said in a Wednesday media release announcing the hire. “Dr. Stratemeyer’s experience as an administrator and teacher will greatly benefit this school in years to come, and I know he is excited to build upon the great work already happening at East Jackson High School.”

Stratemeyer graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s degree, and later earned his master’s degree from Grand Canyon University. He later returned to the University of Georgia, where he earned his Doctorate in Education Leadership in 2017.

Chanda, who served as East Jackson's principal for the last four years, is retiring after 29 years with the Jackson County School System.
