Two injured in Barrow County plane crash

Two people were injured Friday morning after their small plane crashed in Winder near the Barrow County Airport. They were transported to area hospitals.

According to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration, the single-engine Cessna 172 crashed at 10:50 a.m.. The pilot reported engine failure.

Firefighters found the two-seater plane in a wooded residential area off Giles Road. The plane passengers had escaped the plane before firefighters arrived. 

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Peter Knudson confirmed that the passengers were not seriously injured.

According to Captain Scott Dakin, public information officer at Barrow County Emergency Services, the plane suffered extensive damage and was on fire. 

“Firefighters brought the fire under control quickly and contained it to the area around the plane,” Dakin said.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the case.
