Authorities release name of man killed in Banks County OIS

Authorities have released the name of the man who was shot and killed Thursday in an officer-involved shooting in Banks County.

According to an update posted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Felix Catarino, 52, of Commerce, allegedly advanced toward a deputy with a metal pipe. Catarino allegedly ignored the deputy's commands, leading the deputy to fire his gun at Catarino.

Catarino died as a result of his injuries. No other injuries were reported in the incident.

One man is dead following an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night in Banks County.

According to a press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, a Banks County Sheriff's Office deputy was called to a Commerce home over a dispute between a local taxi driver and their passenger. The passenger was allegedly refusing to pay for his fare.

The deputy attempted to take the male passenger into custody, but the man ignored the deputy's commands and grabbed a metal pipe. The man advanced toward the deputy with the metal pipe and continued to ignore the deputy's commands, so the deputy shot him.

EMS was on-scene to provide medical aid, but the man died at the scene. No deputies were injured.

The man's identity has not been released, and his body has been taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. 

The GBI is independently investigating the incident.
