A former Madison County sheriff's deputy will spend life in prison after entering a guilty plea Monday for fatally shooting a University of Georgia student in 2019.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Winford "Trey" Terrell Adams, 34, pleaded guilty in an Athens-Clarke County courtroom to felony murder and aggravated assault in the death of Benjamin Lloyd Cloer, 26.

Aside from life in prison, Adams was given 10 additional years for the aggravated assault charge.

The AJC said the incident happened in November 2019. Adams allegedly believed Cloer was having an affair with his wife. Authorities responded to the 6000 block of Old Jefferson Road at about 6:45 p.m. and found Cloer with multiple gunshot wounds.

Adams called 911 for help and admitted to shooting Cloer. He had been employed with the Madison County Sheriff's Office since 2018, according to the AJC.
