Baseball: GHS wins again; No. 1 North Hall dumped by North Forsyth

GAINESVILLE — Gainesville scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning and then held on for a 4-3 win over Stephens County on Tuesday at Ivey-Watson Field.

The Red Elephants got the two decisive runs on a wild pitch with two out.

From there, Anthony Lugo pitched the final inning in relief to earn the save but not before allowing one run and stranding the tying and go-ahead runs on base. 

Lugo was the third Red Elephants (2-1) pitcher on the day. William Scott started and went five innings, allowing two runs on three hits and five walks while fanning four. Landon Deyton got the win allowing one run on two hits in one inning for Gainesville.

Patrick Murray took the loss for Stephens County, allowing two runs in one inning of work. Cruz Mullinix started the game for Stephens County and struck out 11 in five innings but surrendered two runs on four hits.

The Indians took a 1-0 lead in the second but Gainesville plated two runs in the third to take the lead. Stephens County scored once in the fifth to tie the game.

Alex Kelley, Cody Brewer, Deyton, Will Barrett, and Baxter Wright each had one hit for Gainesville.

The Class 3A No. 1-ranked Trojans suffered their second loss in four games on Tuesday, this time to the Class 7A Raiders in Coal Mountain.

North Forsyth (5-0) started strong, scoring two runs in the first against Jaret Bales. North Hall (2-2) took the lead in the third, all with two out, on an RBI single from Jace Bowen and a two-run double from Bradford Puryear.

But the Raiders exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Michail Harris and a two-RBI hit from Tyler Triche for a 9-3 lead.

The Trojans scored three more in the fourth on a two-run home run from Tate Brooks and an RBI double from Bowen. But North Forsyth put it out of reach with four runs in the sixth, including three consecutive bases-loaded walks.
