A Brenau University professor and the chair of the Lynn J. Darby School of Psychology and Adolescent Counseling has been named a Fuller E. Callaway Professorial Chair.
The award, given to Dr. Julie Battle, comes from the Fuller E. Callaway Professorial Trust, which was established in 1968 by the Callaway Foundation Inc. The trust was created to encourage the enrichment of the academic programs at Georgia's senior colleges, universities and graduate schools by providing funds for the creation of professorial chairs to help retain and add faculty members.
Dr. Battle said the award means a lot to her on a personal level.
"It's a great honor for me personally, but also for Brenau and for our Darby School of Psychology and Adolescent Counseling," Dr. Battle said. "I feel like a lot of this has to do with the people that surround me. So I have a fabulous group of faculty who do wonderful work."
Dr. Battle started at Brenau in 1999, at which time the school only had an undergraduate psychology program and two psychology faculty members. She said within four years of starting at Brenau, she worked with other faculty to develop a graduate program. The university is now in the process of developing a doctoral program.
Growth at the Darby School is driven by a national and statewide gap in mental health services. The employment of counselors in substance abuse, behavioral disorder and mental health is expected to grow 23% through 2030, according to a press release from the university.
