Riverside Preparatory Academy has set a new record for most donations from a school during their annual school food drive.
Acoording to a press release from Riverside, Georgia Mountain Food Bank estimates one in eight people in Georgia suffer from hunger and malnutrition.
GMFB, which serves five counties including Hall, invited Riverside and other local schools to participate in their annual school food drive.
“One of the things we try to stress to volunteers, schools in particular, is how important it is to start getting future generations involved right now,” Denise Bernardi, volunteer coordinator at GMFB said.
Riverside cadets hand painted bowls with phrases such as “You are not alone” during the Empty Bowl Luncheon program over the Summer.
GMFB reported that most of those bowls were donated to their organization during this cause.
In less than two weeks, more than 10,000 cans of food were collected by cadets and their families.
Headquarters Company, a cadet company at Riverside, also competed in this program and took first place after collecting more than 6,000 cans.
