Sisu opens applications for Nancy Copper Sisu Spark Award

Sisu Integrated Early Learning announced that it has opened applications for the Nancy Copper Sisu Spark Award.

These awards are open to people of all ages who have shown an indomitable spirit when overcoming adversity. There are four questions for applicants to answer why they demonstrate Sisu qualities. A letter of recommendation is encouraged to accompany the application.

“Sisu” is a Finnish word and concept that describes extraordinary determination in the face of adversity and courage in situations where a positive outcome seems unlikely.

Sisu Integrated Early Learning serves children with special needs alongside their typically-developing peers.

The Nancy Copper Sisu Spark Award was created to honor former board member Copper during her cancer trial.

The fourth annual Nancy Copper Sisu Spark Award was awarded to two candidates last November.

Wesley Gailey’s early years were limited to waiting rooms and surgeries, but in a press release Sisu described him as ““fierce, strong, and resilient.” The other recipient, Will Crane, also experienced many surgeries and turned his pain into Gold and Silver medals at the Special Olympics World Games.

In a press release, Sisu said Crane was able to “overcome all odds and thrive through adversity” while showing love and kindness to others.

This year’s winning candidate will be named at Sisu’s Seasons of Sisu fundraiser on Nov. 4.
