United Way of Hall County hosting 5K race to benefit poverty initiative

By Lauren Hunter Multimedia Journalist

Staff with the United Way of Hall County are hosting a 5K race on March 5 to benefit the nonprofit's One Hall United Against Poverty Initiative.

The United We Run 5K and Fun Run will start at Chicopee Baptist Church at 7:30 a.m. A fun run for families and anyone not interested in the full course will start at 8:40 a.m. The 5K race itself will start at 9 a.m.

"We welcome people to come out and run, walk, skip, or push a stroller, however you want to get down the Highlands to Islands trail and back," said Teigha Snowden, director of advocacy for United Way of Hall County.

The full 5K race route follows Phase II of the Highlands to Islands Trail. Snowden said the fun run is approximately one mile long.

Proceeds from the cost of race registration will go toward the One Hall United Against Poverty initiative. This initiative consists of committees dedicated to ending poverty in Hall County.

Committees meet monthly and consist of local organizations and community members. The committees are focused on areas of health, education, mental and behavioral health, financial stability and advocacy.

Before the start of the races, volunteers from local community organizations will have booths set up with information on health, nutrition and even a LifeSouth blood drive.

Following the races, participants are invited to walk across the street to Left Nut Brewing Company for an award ceremony, food vendors and other family-friendly activities.

Snowden said United Way of Hall County staff decided to host a 5K to go along with one of the nonprofit's goals of promoting an active lifestyle.

"We thought it was a good way to invite our community to come out and do something that is active," said Snowden. "One of our initiatives is to move your body and be active, so it benefits your physical and mental well-being."

Snowden said staff hopes to have at least 200 people there for the event.
