Forsyth County man killed in Newnan officer involved shooting

By Austin Eller News Director

A Forsyth County man was shot and killed by a police officer during a standoff with authorities Sunday in Newnan.

A press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation named Sean Michael Kinney, 37, of Cumming as the man who was shot and killed. No officers were injured.

Authorities first received information about a domestic incident at 25 Second Ave. in Newnan at about 5:22 p.m. Sunday. Officers arrived at the home about five minutes later, however, they were unable to contact anyone at the door.

Officers ran the license plate of a car parked in the driveway of the home and identified the victim in the domestic incident. Officers called the woman but did not receive a response.

Newnan Police activated the SWAT team and began setting up a perimeter around the home. Numerous attempts to talk with the individuals inside the home went unanswered. The SWAT team approached the front door of the home shortly before 7:00 p.m., at which time a Newnan Police Officer saw Kinney with a knife in his hand through a window. A woman was also seen sitting on the ground in a door behind Kinney.

Kinney then allegedly turned and started walking toward the woman with the knife in his hand, and the Newnan Police Officer fired multiple rounds through the window, killing Kinney. The woman was found safe.

The GBI will conduct an investigation of the incident. Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Coweta County Judicial Circuity District Attorney's Office.
