Demorest man dies in camper fire

By AccessWDUN staff

A 54-year-old Demorest man was killed Friday when a camper he was in outside a home caught fire, according to an official from Habersham County emergency services.

Firefighters were called the scene in the 300 block of Habersham Mills Road about 7:30 a.m. with reports that someone was inside the camper, said Matt Ruark, training officer for Habersham County.

Ruark said the camper was fully involved and it took crews about 30 minutes to extinguish the flames. That's when they found the body of Johnny Lee Higginbotham.

Habersham County officials asked the State Fire Marshal's office to investigate the fire and the death. In a statement, the Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioners office said the investigation is continuing, but it appears the cause of the fire is accidental.
