Gainesville City Schools reinstates mask mandate

By AccessWDUN Staff

Students in Gainesville City Schools will be required to wear masks when they return from winter break on Wed., Jan 5, 2022.

According to a press release from the school system, the mask mandate is being reinstated out of caution of the spread of COVID-19 during winter break.

"While we are hopeful our students and employees have all notified us of positive cases or potential exposures, we are erring on the side of caution until we settle into our structured routines," Superintendent Jeremy Williams said in a prepared statement.

Students will still return to in-person instruction on Wednesday.

Mask use is also strongly encouraged when it comes to community events such as basketball.

While the mandate will remain in effect until further notice, the school system will continue to monitor community and school transmission data. If they determine a downward trend in COVID-19 cases, the mandate may be removed at the district level.

Weekly COVID cases will continue to be reported on the Gainesville City Schools website.
