POWDER SPRINGS — Gainesville did what it had to do in a 20-7 win over Hillgrove on the road Friday night.
The Red Elephants(4-1, 1-0 Region 6-7A) used the rushing attack and went to the air when they needed to dispatch the Hawks for their fourth straight win of the season.
Naim Cheeks led Gainesville on the ground with 126 yards on 27 carries, while Baxter Wright ran it 12 times for 76 yards and two touchdowns.
Wright also passed for 86 yards and Giovanni Martinez added two field goals from 24 and 28 yards. The Red Elephants outgained Hillgrove 317-215.
Martinez put the Red Elephants on the board with a 24-yard field goal, and on the ensuing drive, forced a turnover that would be cashed in by Wright on a 12-yard run. Martinez booted his second field goal late in the half to push the lead, 13-0.
In the second half, Wright added his second score early in the fourth quarter on a one-yard run.
