Jason Croft captures Super Late Model win at Rome

By Jeff Smith

Jason Croft took home his third Rome Boss title with the Super Late Model victory at Georgia’s Rome Speedway on Sunday night.

The win was worth $3,000 for the Woodstock, Georgia racer.

Croft started on the outside pole, but launched past pole sitter Tyler Millwood on the drop of the green flag. Croft held the advantage until he became mired in lapped traffic, allowing Millwood to close and challenge for the lead. That battle evaporated when a caution flag flew on lap 28.

On the restart, Millwood was involved in an incident, and Croft was able to draw clear of all his pursuers en route to the victory.

Dalton Cook finished in second, with Ronnie Johnson in third, Aaron Wilson in fourth, and Benjamin Crawford in fifth.

In other action, Ronnie Johnson topped the field to take the Steelhead 525 feature victory. He earned a $500 bonus as fast qualifier and led all 20 laps en route to a $1500 payday. Oliver Gentry followed in second, with Mike Bruner in third, Rucker Orr in fourth and Chris Fennell in fifth.

Jeff Smith won the 604 Crate feature. Smith, a semi-retired driver, started third. He made a high side pass on lap 10 to take the lead from pole sitter Blant Duke. Smith cruised the rest of the way to the victory. Devin Stuart, Duke, A.J. Carlisi and Kyler Haygood rounded out the top five.

Thirty-eight 602 Sportsman registered on the night, and track officials decided to run two features. Taylor Cole captured his third win of 2021 at Rome in the first feature. In the second feature, Stevie Brannon jumped to the early lead. He withstood heavy pressure from Mario Gresham and Hayden Swaney to win his first career 602 Sportsman feature. Swaney finished second followed by Gresham, Rob Johnson and Zach Pilcher.

Jeremy Williams continued his dominance in Economy Bomber class in 2021, as he recorded his 10th feature of the year. Cody Newton came home in second, with Andrew Findley in third, Logan Warren in fourth, and Derek Young in fifth.

Don Jenkins has caught fire in the Open Wheel Modified class in the second half of 2021. Jenkins worked his way through the pack to earn his fifth featured win of the year. Kyle May finished second, with Jarred Gray third, Dan Ferguson fourth, and David Newton fifth.

Kenny Clark capped off the night by winning Street Stinger feature. Clark started deep in the field and quickly moved to the top spot. Clark held off Shaun Harper in the waning laps to win his first race of 2021. Harper finished second followed by Jason Young in third, Allen Jones in fourth, and Michael Albright in fifth.

Rome Speedway concludes their 2021 season with the Rome Shootout featuring the Lucas Oil Dirt Late Models on Sunday, October 10. For more information, visit DixieSpeedway.com.
