A social media post from a student puts Habersham County school on alert

A potentially threatening social media post from a student put the Habersham Ninth Grade Academy on alert early this morning.

According to a news release from the school system, a parent alerted the school about a post made to Snapchat. In that post, a student had posted a threatening message along with a photo of another student holding a BB gun.

School officials immediately involved the Habersham County’s Sheriff’s Office. Authorities located the student in the picture and interviewed that individual. After a complete investigation, they determined none of the students involved posed any real danger. The press release says that the student who originally posted it only intended it as a joke.

School officials, along with deputies from the Sheriff’s Office, made a point to remind students of the seriousness of posting inappropriate messages to social media. The press release said that “even though it was only intended as a joke, both law enforcement and school officials are dealing with the student who actually made the post.”

The Habersham Ninth Grade Academy is located in Mt. Airy and is a part of the Habersham County School System.
