Well, Week 3 saw three teams get their first win of the season, and two of those teams snapped long losing streaks.
Friday night began with some big news out of Flowery Branch with the Falcons and Gainesville resigning the 2021 contract to play the annual rivalry this week. It had been previously canceled due to COVID-19 positive cases inside the Branch program. It's no back on for this week.
Chestatee snapped an 11-game skid when they earned a thrilling 41-28 win over Union County at home, while East Jackson ended its 10-game losing streak with a 28-0 win over Banks County. White County also picked up its first win of the season over Pickens, 20-7.
Flowery Branch travels to Gainesville. After canceling the game last week and both programs saying it would be made up, the two decided that wasn't a good idea. On Friday afternoon, both Branch and Gainesville agreed to play the game this week -- the two had a scheduled off week. It makes this game even more interesting. Flowery Branch was the one with the unfortunate COVID-19 cases inside the program and could be playing without key players. Gainesville, on the other hand, seems to be healthy. Regardless, history shows this will be a back-and-forth battle. The Falcons have won the last three games and before that, the Red Elephants had one three in a row in a series they lead, 10-6. It could be said it's Gainesville's turn for a victory. The margin of victory over the last four games has been just over eight points. This one will be another dandy at City Park on Friday. West Hall is looking to start the season 3-0 for the first time since 2012 when they travel to Chestatee. The War Eagles come into the game flying high off their first win in 11 games on Friday. They knocked off Union County, 41-28, and found a rhythm on both offense and defense against the Panthers. West Hall, however, is riding a 2-0 start and had an extra week to prepare for the War Eagles as the Battle of Oakwood was pushed to late October. The Spartans have one of the best defenses in the area, while the War Eagles offense is on the verge of being a massive handful with quarterback Luke Bornhorst and running back Jason Granados guiding the way. This game, however, could come down to who can make the stops late in the game. You can listen to the game on WDUN FM 102.9. (Click to listen live)
And East Hall travels to Johnson. East Hall is a work in progress as is Johnson. It's going to be a game where both programs still are trying to work all the kinks out. However, the Vikings seem to be ahead as far as kinks go. They have Clete Cooper back at quarterback and almost upset Franklin County on Friday in a 31-28 loss. The Knights, on the other hand, still are very young and lost to Cherokee Bluff, 57-7, two weeks ago. How much improvement the Knights have made over the last couple of weeks will be huge in determining the outcome of this game. They'll be prepared, but will the Knights have enough to be in the game against the Vikings' passing attack, and can they muster enough offense to keep the game close in the fourth quarter. The game can be heard live on FM 94.5 The Lake. (Click to listen live)
