ICYMI: Week 4 previews -- Monster showdowns highlight busy Friday in NEGa

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

It may be a week later than everyone expected, but the Flowery Branch-Gainesville showdown at City Park Stadium is happening this week.

That game will highlight a busy night around Northeast Georgia on Friday as 18 games are set to kickoff.

The Falcons-Red Elephants matchup was originally scheduled for last week but COVID issues forced the teams to first cancel the game outright but then decide to push it back a week since both teams had open dates. Whew!

But that isn’t the only marquee game on tap this week.

Buford, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, entertains Myers Park (N.C.) out of Charlotte in a battle of state powerhouses. The Mustangs (2-1) are ranked eighth in North Carolina, all classifications, and bring in a wide-open offense that is sure to test, and be tested, by a Wolves (2-0) defense that is among Georgia’s best.

Class 4A No. 1 Jefferson heads to Class 7A Mountain View as the unbeaten Dragons (3-0) continue a tough non-region schedule. White County (1-2) plays host to Habersham Central (1-1) in a mountain rivalry that has become one of the area’s best and most fierce in recent years.

And, Class 2A No. 2 Rabun County heads out of state to take on Murphy (N.C.). The Bulldogs are ranked third in Class A West and are the defending Class A North Carolina state champions.
