ICYMI: Week 4 previews -- Monster showdowns highlight busy Friday in NEGa

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

It may be a week later than everyone expected, but the Flowery Branch-Gainesville showdown at City Park Stadium is happening this week.

That game will highlight a busy night around Northeast Georgia on Friday as 18 games are set to kickoff.

The Falcons-Red Elephants matchup was originally scheduled for last week but COVID issues forced the teams to first cancel the game outright but then decide to push it back a week since both teams had open dates. Whew!

But that isn’t the only marquee game on tap this week.

Buford, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, entertains Myers Park (N.C.) out of Charlotte in a battle of state powerhouses. The Mustangs (2-1) are ranked eighth in North Carolina, all classifications, and bring in a wide-open offense that is sure to test, and be tested, by a Wolves (2-0) defense that is among Georgia’s best.

Class 4A No. 1 Jefferson heads to Class 7A Mountain View as the unbeaten Dragons (3-0) continue a tough non-region schedule. White County (1-2) plays host to Habersham Central (1-1) in a mountain rivalry that has become one of the area’s best and most fierce in recent years.

And, Class 2A No. 2 Rabun County heads out of state to take on Murphy (N.C.). The Bulldogs are ranked third in Class A West and are the defending Class A North Carolina state champions.

The Knights are still rebuilding in their second season with Coach Harrell and have lost 13 straight. East Hall is trying to avoid its first 0-3 start since 2018. ... It figures to be a tough matchup for the Johnson defense against Vikings QB Clete Cooper and a talented WR group. East Hall is also still getting acclimated to new coach Matt Turner but the offense is starting to show signs of breaking loose. ... The Vikings' defense, however, is still looking for improvement. They have yielded 86 points (43 ppg) after giving up 35 ppg in 2020.

The Eagles snapped their 10-game losing streak last week with their best offensive output since scoring 36 in a loss to Rabun County last year. It also was their first shutout win since beating Banks in 2019. ... The Bobcats got their first win for new coach Paul Standard. They racked up 327 total yards of offense vs. Murray County. ... East Jackson is looking to win consecutive games for the first time since opening the 2019 campaign 3-0. ... Region 7-3A has struggled in the early going. The region as a whole is 8-13 in non-region play. But Cherokee Bluff and West Hall are 5-0 combined leaving the rest of the region at 3-13 so far.

-- NOTABLE: North Forsyth leads series 3-2. The Raiders won 28-0 in 2020 in Woodstock. ... The key matchup in this one will be the Etowah offense vs. Raiders defense. The Eagles have been outscored 64-14 in 2021 and have not scored more than 14 points in 14 consecutive games. North Forsyth has been a force on defense since the beginning of 2020 allowing just 16 ppg over its last 13 games. ... Etowah is just 1-13 in its last 14 games and has dropped 8 straight on the road. -- NOTABLE: Gainesville leads series 10-6. Flowery Branch won 29-22 in 2020. The Falcons have won three straight in the series. The last Gainesville win came in 2015, 29-26, at City Park. ... This game was originally scheduled for last week but was postponed due to COVID. Both teams had an open date this week and pushed it back one week. ... For all the talk of the Falcons offense in the off-season, the Branch defense has been nearly impenetrable. After giving up 14 points in the opening quarter against St. Pius, the Falcons have yielded just 7 points (1 TD) over the past 6 quarters. They have created 3 turnovers in the first 2 games. ... The Falcons offense has shown good balance with RB Myles Ivey and QB David Renard leading the way. ... The Red Elephants scored in all three phases last week, including two on special teams. They blocked a punt for a safety (Tyvez Bledson), and got a Dre Raven 51-yard punt return for a touchdown. ... The rebuilt GHS offense broke out in a big way last week behind So. RB Naim Cheeks, who finished with 65 yards on five carries, and So. QB Baxter Wright, who was 11-of-13 for 165 yards and 2 TDs. ... Some interesting numbers early show Wright (27-37, 72.9%, 303 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT) and Renard 21-37, 56.7%, 301 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT) have almost identical stat lines through two games. ... Despite the Lions dominating the series, 3 of the last 4 meetings and 8 overall have been decided by just 7 points or less. ... The Lions are one of five unbeaten teams in a juggernaut Region 8-3A that is 15-2 in non-region play, the best of any region in any classification in the state. ... Region 8-5A, by contrast, with two more teams than 8-3A is just 5-12 so far in non-region play. ... The Panthers defense fared the best of any team that faced a balanced and powerful Stephens County offense holding them to 29 points, a season-low to this point. ... The Lions offense isn’t as potent as Stephens County but is averaging 29 ppg. But they piled up 397 yards on the ground last week, with Micah Blackwell rushing for 248 yards and 3 TDs. ... The magic number for Jackson County may be 20. When the Panthers have scored 20 or more points in Rich McWhorter’s offense, they are 6-0. They are just 2-14 when scoring less than 20 points. ... Franklin County is allowing just 13.5 ppg on defense.

GEORGIA MILITARY at RIVERSIDE MILITARY

RMA is also looking for its first 2-0 start since 2008. ... The Bulldogs are coached by former East Hall alum Lee Coleman and are looking for their first 3-0 start since 2018. ... -- WHERE: Warriors Stadium, Cleveland
-- RADIO: 93.9 FM WRWH
-- HABERSHAM CENTRAL (1-1, 0-0 Region 8-6A): Off last week; defeated Apalachee 27-7 two weeks ago
-- WHITE COUNTY (1-2, 0-0 Region 8-6A): Defeated Pickens 20-7 last week
-- NOTABLE: Habersham Central leads series 7-4. White County won 28-21 in 2020 in Mt. Airy. ... This has turned into one of the better rivalries in Northeast Georgia over the past decade. Eight of the meetings have been since 2012 with the Warriors holding a 4-3 edge in that span. Three of the latest five meetings have gone down to the final play. ... White County finally put things together last week after a rough beginning. Look for them to continue to use a two QB system with Sr. Billy Carder and Fr. Tripp Nix, who have both looked good at times and not-so-good at times so far. They are far off their pace of 39.7 ppg in 2020 but may be close to finding the right combinations and still have dynamic playmakers Silas Mulligan and Darius Cannon. ... The Raiders have reworked their defense, especially the secondary, which may hold the key to this one as they will try to slow down Cannon and a good Warriors’ WR group. But they also have 17 TFL on the season as a group in two games. ... The Habersham offense has been using its big line to churn out 223 yards/game so far behind Sr. Simarcus Burney (35 car., 200 yards, 1 100-yard game) and So. QB Carson Parker (21 car., 149 yards).  ... The Warriors are allowing 30 ppg on defense and struggled against power-rushing teams Stephens County and Hart County in the opening two weeks.

-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Bears Stadium, Lawrenceville
-- JEFFERSON (3-0, 0-0 Region 8-4A): Ranked No. 1 n Class 4A; defeated Southside (SC) 45-7 last week
-- MOUNTAIN VIEW (2-1, 0-0 Region 8-7A): Defeated Lanier 28-20 last week
-- NOTABLE: Jefferson leads series 1-0. The Dragons won 40-7 in 2020 in Jefferson. ... The Bears are off to their best start since 2018 due to revamped defense. They allowed 37.5 ppg in 2020, the most in their history in a full season, but so far this season they are giving up just 23.3 ppg. This will be their biggest challenge to date. ... Jefferson is 2nd in scoring in Class 4A (109, 36.3 ppg) behind a punishing ground game, led by So. Sammy Brown (17 car., 308 yards, 4 TD) and Sr. QB Malaki Starks (16 car., 162 yards, 3 TD). ... The Bears will try and counter with a passing attack that is averaging 250 yards/ game behind Jr. QB Mason Kidd (49-89, 743 yards, 7 TD, 2 INT). Sr. WR Sean Reese (13 rec., 277 yards, 5 TD) is his favorite and he had 6 catches for 158 yards and 2 TDs vs. Lanier. Sr. Justin Wilson (13 rec., 247 yards, 1 TD) also will be a tough matchup. ... The Dragons, however, can counter with Starks and a talented secondary of Dawson Crawley, Tre Reece, and Chase Johnson that helped hold Gunner Stockton and Rabun County to less than 200 yards passing in their opener.

LAKEVIEW ACADEMY at WALKER
-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Robertson Field, Marietta
-- LAKEVIEW ACADEMY (0-2, 0-0 Region 6-A Private): Lost 40-3 to Rabun Gap last week

-- NOTABLE: Lakeview Academy leas series 1-0. The Lions won 34-0 in 2020 in Gainesville. ... Both teams come into this one struggling in 2021. A young Lions team is still trying to find its way. They have scored just 16 points (8.0 ppg) and have allowed 88 points (44.0 ppg) in the early going. ... However, they are running into a Wolverines team that is just 1-15 in their last 16 games and have had 4 head coaches since the final game of the 2019 season. ... Walker is averaging just 10.0 ppg on offense and giving up 35.3 ppg on defense. They have given up 33 or more points in 7 straight games going back to last season.

LANIER CHRISTIAN at HOLY SPIRIT PREP
-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Atlanta, 5 p.m.
-- LANIER CHRISTIAN (2-0, GAPPS 8-man): Off last week; defeated Lafayette Christian 30-0 two weeks ago
-- HOLY SPIRIT PREP (0-2, GISA 8-man): Lost 58-0 to Windsor Academy last week
-- NOTABLE: Lanier Christian leads series 1-0. The Lightning won 36-13 in 2019. ... On paper, this looks like a huge mismatch as the Lightning have outscored their opponents 96-0 and Holy Spirit has been outscored 114-0 so far in two games apiece. ... Despite the offensive firepower, LCA is only the 5th-highest scoring team in GAPPS 8, by average (48 ppg) so far. ... So. QB Walker Anderson and Fr. RB Zeke Clanton have been a brutal 1-2 punch on the ground combining for 399 yards and 5 TDs so far. Jr. Carter Raulerson has 104 yards and 3 TDs on just 11 carries as well. ... The Cougars have lost 11 straight games going back to the 2019 season.

LUMPKIN COUNTY at BANKS COUNTY
-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Leopards Stadium, Homer
-- RADIO: northgeorgiasportslink.com
-- LUMPKIN COUNTY (0-2, 0-0 Region 7-3A): Off the last week; lost 54-7 to Chamblee two weeks ago
-- BANKS COUNTY (0-2, 0-0 Region 8-2A): Lost 28-0 to East Jackson last week
-- NOTABLE: Lumpkin County leads series 10-5. Banks County won 37-0 in 2020 in Dahlonega. The Leopards have won three straight in the series. The last Lumpkin win came in 2005, 32-20, in Homer. ... The Leopards have dropped 9 straight, if you count a forfeit in last year’s playoffs. Their last win came against Lumpkin County last season. ... Offense has been an issue for Banks County during the streak. They have yet to score in 2021 and have scored just 33 points (4.1 ppg) in their last 8 games played. ... Lumpkin County is still trying to snap a program-worst 18-game losing streak going back to a Sept. 2019 win over Gilmer. The Indians also have lost 12 straight road games going back to a win over Cherokee Bluff in 2018. ... Offense also has been the main problem for the Indians, who have scored just 154 total points (8.5 ppg) during the losing streak. ... However, both teams have battled several COVID issues during the 2020 and 2021 seasons so far, which has played havoc with their rosters.

MYERS PARK (NC) at BUFORD
-- WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
-- WHERE: Tom Riden Stadium, Buford
-- MYERS PARK (Fla.) (2-1): Ranked No. 8 in North Carolina, all classes; defeated Reagan (NC) 35-20 last week
-- BUFORD (2-0): Ranked No. 1 in Class 6A; off last week; defeated Clarke Central 16-3 two weeks ago
-- NOTABLE: First-ever meeting between the two programs. ... A showdown of state powerhouses. ... The Mustangs have won two straight while Buford is working on a 15-game win streak. ... There will be great matchups all over the field, especially in the trenches, but the best action may be the Mustangs WRs vs. the Wolves secondary. ... Myers is averaging 304 yards/game passing behind Sr. QB Lucas Lenhoff (51-of-77, 914 yards, 9 TD, 3 INT) and has a plethora of talent to throw to, led by Sr. Camarian Thornton (13 rec., 325 yards, 3 TD). Sr. Ayden Burkey (11 rec., 188 yards, 1 TD), Sr. Amir Turner (10 rec., 119 yards, 2 TD), Donyea Coleman ( rec., 122 yards, 1 TD), and Sr. Cole Terrell (2 rec., 19 yards, 2 TD) will be a huge challenge. ... The Wolves will counter with Sr. Florida-commit Isaiah Bond, Sr. Alabama-commit Jake Pope, (1 INT in 2021) Sr. CJ Clinkscales, and So. safeties KJ Bolden and Ty'Shun White. Combined they have 11 PBUs and the defense has forced 5 turnovers in two games. ... A usually potent Buford ground game so far is averaging just 132 yards/game and will need to find some consistency to keep the Mustangs offense off the field.

-- NOTABLE: Dawson County leads series 1-0. The Tigers won 42-20 in 2020. ... It’s doubtful that Sid Maxwell and his staff are panicking. The Tigers are in the exact same spot they were in last season before reeling off four straight wins and 5 of their last 6 overall to grab the No. 3 seed in 7-3A. ... However, mistakes and untimely turnovers continue to plague the offense. A young receiving corp is still trying to get in sync with Sr. QB Zach Holtzclaw, who is connecting on just 52% of his passes for just 1 TD and 4 INTs so far. The running game is averaging just 89 yards/game. ... A reworked defense is allowing 33.3 ppg. ... But they get a Titans squad that is also struggling. Northview has lost 6 straight going back to last season and has been outscored 279-46 in that span. The Titans are last in Class 5A in scoring defense (51.5 ppg) and in the bottom 10 in offense.

RABUN COUNTY at MURPHY (NC)

-- MURPHY (NC) (1-1): Ranked No. 3 in Class A West (NC); defeated Georgia Force 58-14 last week
-- NOTABLE: Murphy leads the series 2-0. The Bulldogs won the last meeting, 49-17, in Murphy. This will be the first meeting between the two teams since that 1987 matchup. ... Rabun has not played in two weeks after its monster matchup with Class A Private No. 2 ELCA was canceled last week. This week’s opponent was supposed to be Walhalla (SC) but that game got wiped out by COVID as well. But the Wildcats managed to find another powerhouse team to take on in the Bulldogs. ... The Bulldogs are the defending Class A North Carolina state champs and have won 10 state titles in their history. ... Murphy is 8-2 in its last 10 home games, with both losses coming to Robbinsville. ... The Bulldogs have compiled three consecutive 10-win seasons and have gone 33-5 in that span with a pair of state titles. ... It should be an offensive showcase. -- NOTABLE: West Hall leads series 10-7. The Spartans won 14-8 in 2020 and have won 6 of the last 7 meetings overall. ... Both teams are trying to continue strong starts that they have not enjoyed in quite a while. The Spartans are looking for their first 3-0 start since 2014 while the War Eagles have not started a season 2-1 since 2013. ... The War Eagles ended their 11-game losing streak, getting a big game from So. RB Jason Granados (34 car., 186 yards, 3 TD) and despite giving up a 20-0 lead to fall behind in the 2nd half the defense sealed it with a pick-6 to end the game. ...There are two key battles in this one. Can a revamped Chestatee defense hold up against a powerful Spartans rushing attack? The other is the West Hall secondary against what is usually a pass-oriented Chestatee spread offense. ... The 28 points allowed last week by the War Eagles is only the third time in the last 19 games they have allowed less than 30 points. ... West Hall is averaging 275 yards/game on the ground behind Sr. Tilil Blackwell (32 car., 180 yards, 4 TD) and Sr. Jaden White (7 car., 120 yards, 1 TD) with five players with 65 or more yards so far in just two games. ...

-- EAST FORSYTH (0-3, 0-0 Region 7-3A): Lost 59-0 to Cherokee Bluff last week
-- NOTABLE: First-ever meeting between the two programs. ... It doesn’t get any easier for the new Broncos program. After facing a D-I-loaded Rabun Gap and the defending Region 7-3A champion Bears in back-to-back weeks, now they get a Wolfpack team that has knocked off two ranked teams in consecutive weeks. ... From GHSF Daily, Wolfpack RB/LB Caleb LaVallee had 17 tackles, 4 TFL, and had 78 yards and 2 TDs rushing last week to fuel a come-from-behind win. ...
