Fire destroys building in downtown Royston

There were no injuries reported, but a commercial building in downtown Royston was a total loss after a fire Tuesday night.

Royston Fire Department personnel were still on the scene Wednesday morning putting out hotspots. They were called to the scene on Bower and Church streets around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to Captain John Lorentson.

"We arrived on scene and had heavy smoke showing throughout the whole building," said Lorentson. "We... tried to do an interior attack on the building and we could not make any headway, so we set up what we call defensive operations from the outside, and that's kind of where we've been since 7:30 last night."

Lorentson said the building was a storage unit that was housing furniture. They don't have an estimate yet on the monetary value of the loss.

Local government officials, in comments on social media, said the building at one time was a theater.

The fire and the cause are under investigation by the state fire marshal.
