Legacy brick fundraiser begins for new GHS building

A fundraiser has been announced involving the bricks in front of the new cafeteria and media center on Gainesville High School's campus.

The building is edging closer to completion, with an expected opening date of Spring 2022. In front of the building, there are four brick inlays in front of the doors. That's where the engraved bricks will be placed. The bricks currently in place will be replaced with the new bricks ordered as part of this project, and original bricks dedicated in 1999-2000.

The Legacy Brick fundraiser is a partnership with one of the alumni scholarships at the school and a local foundation.

"To set up this payment system, we actually set up an account with the North Georgia Community Foundation specifically for this purpose," said Gainesville City School System Director of Marketing, Communications and Public Relations Joy Griffin at Monday's school board meeting. "$15 of the brick will be used to cover the cost of the engraving and the other $15 will go towards the 1964 Alumni Scholarship Fund that benefits our current Gainesville High School graduates."

The flier shows Gainesville alumnus and 1973 Masters Champion Tommy Aaron holding one of the engraved bricks. Aaron is the honorary chair of the campaign.

Bricks are $30 each and can be engraved with up to three lines of text, with a maximum of 17 characters per line. There is an online form available here, or forms can be dropped off with a check at the Northeast Georgia Community Foundation. Checks should be made out to the foundation.

For those bricks from the 1999-2000 fundraiser that will be installed at the new location, Griffin said there's time to update them before they are installed, like if there was a typo on the original brick. Otherwise, new bricks will get the exact same inscription and placed in the inlay.
