COMMERCE — West Hall overcame an early deficit to rally for a 14-7 win over East Jackson on Friday night in both teams' season openers.
East Jackson (0-1) took a quick 7-0 lead in the first quarter but the Spartans (1-0) tied the game with the first of two Tilil Blackwell touchdown runs. Blackwell, who finished with 89 yards on the ground, added another score in the third quarter to give West Hall the lead.
From there, the Spartans' defense held off the Eagles down the stretch.
West Hall finished with 244 yards of total offense. Nick Sturm, making his first start at quarterback, was 9-of-11 for 86 yards through the air. Noah Legault had 34 yards receiving and Maliek Richardson added 33 yards rushing for the Spartans.
On defense, the Spartans picked off a pair of passes with Legault snagging one and Andy Mayo the other, including an 86-yard run that set up the Spartans go-ahead score.
