Tornado confirmed Tuesday in Banks County

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City determined at least four tornadoes touched down in the state during storms earlier this week.

One of those tornadoes was in Banks County in North Georgia. It was an EF1 twister with an estimated peak wind of 90 miles per hour. According to a report from the NWS, the tornado touched down east of Homer, along Bennett Road and west of Highway 63.

The tornado uprooted and twisted off trees in its path, which paralleled Bennett Road. One home was nearly crushed by a falling oak tree. Another homeowner told weather investigators his ears popped as the tornado passed the house, toppling trees on both sides of the home.

The twister moved northwest across a landfill zone and across Highway 51 and Damascus Road, uprooting and snapping numerous trees. It crossed Payne Road, snapping and uprooting more trees and destroying a chicken house. A small trailer was toppled and thrown about 30 yards, as well.

The National Weather Service said in its report the tornado was strongest along Payne Road and weakened as it moved northwest. A tree was blown down into a home on Hawkins Road before the tornado lifted.

Madison County also experienced an EF1 tornado, with a peak wind of 100 miles per hour. One home there had a tree through the master bedroom, two barns were nearly destroyed, several homes were damaged, and a large camper was flipped over. Numerous trees were uprooted and snapped. It occurred west of Danielsville. EF1 tornadoes were also recorded in Greene County and Sumter County.

Dave Nadler with the National Weather Service in Peachtree City said these four tornadoes are just the beginning of their investigation, and there is the possibility of determining that more tornadoes hit Georgia.
