COVID-19 reports continue at Gainesville school system as cases increase

Weekly COVID-19 reports will continue in the Gainesville City School System.

That's according to Superintendent Jeremy Williams during his report at Monday night's board meeting. He said the report will be on the school's website, and shows each school and number of positive COVID-19 cases.

"We'll be updating this every Friday afternoon or evening, based on the information that's available to us at that time," said Williams.

"We were fortunate that last week, as we started back, we only had five new cases as a school system, which is definitely below average from where we were last year, but we also recognize that this week, as cases continue to increase, we're likely going to be higher," said Williams after the meeting. "We stand ready to make adjustments, whether that means changing quarantine guidelines or changing mask guidelines, whether that's at certain schools or across the district that's yet to be seen, but we know that with COVID in the community, we do see other school systems who have been in school two or three weeks ahead, really starting to struggle quite a bit. So we just want to make sure we can stay ahead of it as best possible."

Also in the report, Williams said information sessions for the new middle school will begin next month, with three meetings on schedule. They'll take place at Mundy Mill Learning Academy on September 21, Gainesville Middle School East Campus on September 29, and Gainesville Exploration Academy on October 7, all at 6:30 p.m. Families will have the opportunity to meet Gainesville Middle School West Campus Principal Louis Mair.

A community rally is scheduled Thursday at City Park to kick off the sports season at Gainesville. Also in sports, the Corky Kell Classic series of televised football games will interfere with the release schedule for middle and high school students Friday. Students will be dismissed at 1 p.m., except elementary students, who will be dismissed at their regular time.
