Hall County planning staff to ask for moratorium extension on commercial kennels, ag-entertainment venues

By B.J. Williams

The planning and development staff for Hall County likely will get another 90 days to complete a study on commercial kennels and agri-entertainment businesses.

Since May, there's been a moratorium in place on applications for those two types of businesses, and County Attorney Van Stevens said the staff needs more time to complete its work.

"Both commercial kennels and agri-entertainment venues can be more intensive than other types of uses, and we're just conducting a study to see what regulations need to be updated," Stevens said after Monday afternoon's commission work session.

Stevens said an updated resolution should be ready to present to the Hall County Commission by Oct. 11. The draft resolution would prevent any applications to be filed until Oct. 18, 2021.

Stevens said he was unsure how many applications for commercial kennels and agri-entertainment venues were filed prior to the moratorium in May, but noted the county had received several.

"The applications have been pretty much uniform throughout the county," Stevens said.

When the moratorium was enacted in May, Stevens said it had been about a decade since the county ordinance governing the businesses had been updated.

The Hall County Commission is scheduled to vote on the extension at its 6 p.m. meeting Thursday, Aug. 12 at the Hall County Government Center.
