Habersham County announces new procedure for obtaining burn permits

By AccessWDUN staff

Starting Monday, Aug. 30, residents of Habersham County will have new ways to request burn permits.

Habersham County Emergency Services said citizens have been calling 706-839-0579 and speaking with personnel to obtain their permit number. In the future, they can obtain a permit number by phone or text or by completing an online request.

When citizens call 1-844-844-2876 (BURN) they can receive a burn permit number by phone or text.

Online permits are available at georgiaburnpermits.com

EMS officials remind citizens that a burn permit is required when a person, firm, corporation or association intends to burn hand-piled vegetation/yard debris. No household garbage or man-made refuse is allowed. Agriculture, silviculture and land-clearing burns for residential or commercial development does require notification to the county forest ranger, and a permit is required for these activities, as well.

For citizens in the city of Cornelia or Mt. Airy, please continue to call the Cornelia Fire Department at 706-778-8585 for your permits.

For citizens in Clarkesville, please continue to call the Clarkesville Fire Department at 706-754-2024 for your permits.

For agriculture, silviculture, and land-clearing burns for residential or commercial development, please continue to call the Georgia Forestry 1-877-652-2876.
