Collins capitalizes to claim first Southern Nationals win

By Ryan Delph

BRASSTOWN, N.C. - Kenny Collins capitalized on the misfortune of front row starters Jensen Ford and Dale McDowell to score his first career Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals victory on Tuesday night at Tri-County Race Track in Brasstown, North Carolina.

The Colbert, Georgia native became the sixth different winner so far on the season in six completed events, and took home $4,053 for his efforts.

Ford and McDowell started the feature on the front row, but saw their luck go south early. Ford spun in turns three and four on the second attempted start of the race, and had to restart from the tail end of the field.

McDowell, from Chickamauga, Georgia, then jumped out to the early lead, but tangled with the lapped car of Craig Greer on lap six, resulting in a caution flag. McDowell would restart from the eight position.

That moved Collins to the lead, and from there, he drove away for the victory.

“This is my favorite racetrack and man it feels good to win one of these races,” said Collins. “We’ve spent a lot of money through the years trying to race these Super Late Models and anyone in the pit area can win one of these things. It’s so hard to reach victory lane and I can’t thank my family, crew, and sponsors enough for all of their help and support.”

Series points leader Donald McIntosh, from Dawsonville, Georgia, finished in second, with Cody Overton in third, Shawn Chastain in fourth, and David Payne in fifth.

McDowell, Garrett Smith, Payton Freeman, Benjamin Cranford, and Ford rounded out the top 10.

The Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series will enjoy one final day off on Wednesday before the Championship stretch takes them back to the Peach State on Thursday, July 29 at Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, Georgia.
