DAHLONEGA — University of North Georgia softball pitcher Laken Chambers was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team, the association announced Wednesday afternoon. It is the second year in a row that a UNG pitcher has earned first team status.
Chambers, a former Union County standout, is now the sixth student-athlete from North Georgia to find a spot on the Academic All-America list and the second to be a first team honoree, joining Kylee Smith from the 2020 season. Other UNG awardees include men's basketball's Matt Causey (2005-06), women's basketball's Stephanie Huffman (2014-15), baseball's Kenny Bellavance (2013-14) and women's soccer's Taylor Lee (2013-14).
Chambers won the Elite 90 Award for Division II softball earlier this season as she sports a 4.00 cumulative grade point average in Middle Grades Education.
On the field, Chambers went 14-1 with a 0.95 ERA in 21 appearances. In 88 innings of work, she allowed just 20 runs while fanning 40 batters.
