Fire damages a Lawrenceville restaurant

A Mexican restaurant on fire received help from Gwinnett County firefighters who just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

At 4:43 p.m. on Thursday, a fire medic unit was headed to a call when they saw black smoke coming from the back of Don Pedro Mexican Restaurant off Pleasant Hill Rd. in Lawrenceville.

According to the Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services, the ambulance crew found a restaurant employee trying to put the fire out with a garden hose. The fire medics jumped from the ambulance, quickly put on gear, and ran into the building to ensure no one was in any danger, evacuating the building.

A fire truck arrived shortly after, and all crews assisted in deploying water lines. The fire had made its way to the roof, so additional water support was needed. They were able to keep the fire from spreading to the attic, keeping it to the interior and exterior. The fire was extinguished in 20 minutes but kept checking the roof to be sure there were no hot spots left.

The fire medics also checked all personnel to be sure no one had suffered any physical harm. There were no injuries reported.

An investigator is trying to determine where the fire started and what caused it.
