OAKWOOD — Nick Davidson, a 15-year-old rising sophomore at West Hall, has qualified for the AAU Junior Olympics track meet in Humble, Texas on Aug. 3.

Davidson earned a spot in the 1,500 meter race at the AAU national meet by placing at the AAU Region 8 Junior Olympics Trial at Dutchtown High. Earlier, he won the district AAU in the 1,500 and was third in the 800 meters.

“Competing at the national level raises the bar for what I expect from myself,” Davidson said. “Competing against elite athletes makes me better personally and for my high school team.”

Davidson has been training with his coach Wayne Jones, who said Davidson is determined to change the mindset of track and field at his school and facing tough competition in the summer is a way to do it.

“My coach initially identified that as a goal for me, and I have been training and working hard to achieve it since that time,” he said. “This is my first year running AAU and I am excited to be competing with the best of the best.”

Davidson is having a busy summer. In addition to his track training, he is going through summer workouts with the West Hall football team.

He does summer conditioning and 7-on-7 drills from 8-11:30 a.m. with the football team. After a lunch break, he heads to track practice from 12:30-2 p.m.

“There really isn’t a more competitive atmosphere (than track),” he said. “It is something that I truly enjoy.”

Davidson’s goal is to run track in college at the Naval Academy with the intentions of becoming a Navy Judge Advocate General’s officer.
