SEC notebook: Vandy wins CWS opener; CFP expansion moves forward

By The Associated Press

OMAHA, Neb. — Jayson Gonzalez singled through the infield with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th inning to give Vanderbilt a 7-6 win over Arizona on Saturday nightin the College World Series.

Gonzalez grounded a 1-2 pitch beyond diving shortstop Nik McClaughry’s glove to end the first extra-inning game at the CWS since 2014. It lasted 4 hours, 51 minutes, making it the fourth-longest game in CWS history. Vince Vannelle worked out of a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the 11th but the reigning national champion Commodores wouldn’t be denied in the 12th.

ROSEMONT, Ill. — College Football Playoff expansion took another step forward this week. The full group of commissioners who manage the postseason spent about six hours over two days digging into a proposal to expand from four teams to 12. Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby says it will be months before the process comes to a close. In a 12-team format, six spots would be reserved for the highest-ranked conference champions and and the other six would be at-large sports. The plan calls for first-round games played on campuses. Quarterfinal and semifinals would be bowl games.
