An argument between a customer and an employee at a McDonald's restaurant outside of Jefferson ended in gunfire Thursday night.

Jefferson Police Chief Joe Wirthman confirmed details of the incident, which were first reported on the department's Facebook page.

Wirthman said his officers were called to the McDonald's on U.S. 129 just off I-85 to investigate the shooting, which happened just before 9 p.m.

The investigation indicated the customer, identified only as a black man, drove up to the drive-thru and placed an order. The customer and the female employee got into an argument and the customer reportedly spit on the employee through the pick-up window.

Wirthman said the employee went outside of the restaurant to confront the customer, and as he drove away, he fired one shot at the employee, striking her in the arm. She was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center to be treated for the gunshot wound. Investigators said a second employee who tried to intervene in the situation also was hit by the bullet.

Anyone who has information about the incident is asked to contact Jefferson Police Sgt. Berry Sossoman at 706-367-5231, ext. 2536.
