The 19-year-old who drowned on Lake Lanier Thursday evening has been identified as Sathvik Kothapu, of Cumming, according to Mark McKinnon with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Original story, May 21 2:34 p.m.:

The body of a 19-year-old man was recovered after he drowned on Lake Lanier Thursday evening.

Mark McKinnon, public affairs officer with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, said DNR Game Wardens, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and the Forsyth County Fire Department's dive team all responded to a drowning in Young Deer Creek on Lake Lanier at 7:30 p.m.

The man was attempting to swim across the cove when he became fatigued and went under the water, according to McKinnon.

At 9 p.m. Thursday, Game Wardens located the man underwater using boat-mounted sonar, and a remote-operated vehicle was used to confirm.

The Forsyth County dive team was then able to recover the man from 22 feet of water shortly after.

McKinnon said the man's name will be released once next of kin are notified.
