Kemp signs bill giving paid parental leave to state workers

By AccessWDUN Staff

As Gov. Brian Kemp continues making the rounds this week with his pen in hand, he has now signed HB 146, a  measure that provides three weeks of paid parental leave for state employees.

The measure allows state workers to take up to three weeks of paid leave following the birth or adoption of a child or the placement of a foster child in a family.

"Over the past year, state employees have gone above and beyond to deliver essential services and ensure public safety during this unprecedented time," Kemp said in a statement prepared for the signing event. "I am proud to support legislation that will strengthen Georgia's reputation as the top state for business by ensuring state employees can take paid time off when they welcome a new child into their home."

House Speaker David Ralston also praised the legislation.

"This new paid parental leave benefit for state employees and teachers demonstrates our continuing commitment to Georgia’s families as they welcome a new child through birth, adoption or foster placement," Ralston said. “While this measure does not impose any mandate on private businesses, it is our hope that it may also serve as an example for businesses looking to attract and retain the best employees."

The governor signed the measure at the State Capitol on Wednesday, May 5.
