Demolition underway for development including First National Bank building

By Lauren Hunter Multimedia Journalist

Demolition began this morning on a portion of a live-work-play development that will include the old First National Bank building.

Located across the street from SunTrust bank on E E Butler Parkway, the property will be used as part of a new development called The National. Once completed, development will include a 130 room Courtyard by Marriott hotel, convention space, outdoor plaza and dining areas, according to a press release sent in December of last year by developer Capstone Property Group.

The Courtyard by Marriott hotel will sit next to the old First National Bank building, which will be renovated into a contemporary meeting space and single-bed suites. A third building will feature five floors of luxury apartments.

Local architect Steve Hill of H. Lloyd Hill Architects will oversee the design of residences in the third building and the bank building renovation. Hill's father was the architect on the original First National Bank building, according to the release.

The First National Bank building has been used in several movies filmed in the area and was also a Regions Bank. Developers have filed for a listing on the National Register of Historic Places for the bank.

The entire development for The National is estimated to cost $50 million and expected to be complete by December 2022.
