Names recommended for new Gainesville City middle school

The Gainesville City School System announced four name selections for the new middle school, along with several other details about the new school, at their meeting Monday night.

A committee narrowed it down to the four possible names: South Gainesville, Gainesville Southern, Midland and Queen City.

"We're trying to build in a geographic option as well some historical options, between the engine and also Queen City," said Superintendent Jeremy Williams.

The community is encouraged to give their input on the names by responding to a survey. You can find that survey here. And Williams said, don't be shy about sharing your idea.

"As a group we've narrowed it down to four, but we're not necessarily closed to other ideas as well, that's why there's a comment section."

The boundaries for the new school were also addressed, including where the new boundaries may lay. It is planned for the school's districting to included McEver Road up to John Morrow Parkway and Queen City Parkway, which is what Williams called the Morrow Connector.

"Any time you talk about creating a new school, parents are concerned about what those attendance zones look like," said Williams. Using the Morrow Connector "it would give us about 860 to 900 students and give the other school about 820 to 850 students."

With this districting, the new middle school and Gainesville Middle School will have similar racial, socioeconomic and other demographics.

The mascot will remain in line with the other city schools as the Red Elephant.

The new middle school is located on McEver Road near Gould Road, and is under construction. The latest update on construction can be found here.
