The Gwinnett County Police Department will host a drive-thru food drive on Saturday, April 17 at the Police Training Center.

The department's Community Affairs Section will work with the 110th Police Academy to facilitate the event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Community members are invited to drive by and drop off their donations. Specific requested items include canned items, vegetables, soups, pastas, chicken, tuna, juices and powdered milk. In addition, personal care items including feminine products, deodorant, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpastes, and diapers are also needed.

Corporal Collin Flynn, spokesman for the department, said that donated items will go to local co-ops. In turn, these co-ops will give the items to those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors.

"You're gonna have people that are affected by the pandemic, but you're also gonna have people that are affected by a range of other things, whether it be homelessness, loss of a job or just down on their luck and in need of some kind of assistance," said Flynn.

Flynn said the event will benefit department officials, as well.

"It's an opportunity for our Community Affairs Section to get out amongst the community, meet people and talk to people, let people know what the mission is of the department," said Flynn.

Flynn added that anyone who wants to donate items but cannot attend the event can reach out to the police department ahead of time for an appointment to drop off donations. The training center is located at 854 Winder Highway in Lawrenceville.
