OAKWOOD — The Gainesville boys and North Hall girls captured the 2021 Hall County Championships titles on Thursday at Royal Lakes Country Club.
The Red Elephants fired a 298 and held off Lakeview Academy (311) for the win. It was the best-ever finish for the Lions in the tournament.
The Lady Trojans shot a 244 to beat second-place Flowery Branch (279).
For the boys, Gainesville held a slim four-shot lead over the Lions, 149 to 153, after the opening day but equaled their first day total while the Lions managed just a 158, which was good enough to hold onto second.
North Hall was third at 326, Cherokee Bluff fourth at 336, and Chestatee took fifth with a 368. Flowery Branch was sixth (374), Johnson seventh (391), and East Hall eighth (497).
The boys individual title was a dogfight both days between Gainesville's Wiley Hickerson and Lakeview's Tanner Stephens. Stephens, a freshman, had a two-shot lead after the first day but Hickerson fired a 2-under 34 on Thursday to force a playoff as both shot even-par 72. Hickerson then beat Stephens in a playoff for the title.
Gainesville and Lakeview dominated the top of the leaderboard with seven of the top eight finishers. Gainesville's Sam Patterson, Brigham Ralston, and Lakeview's Chandler Lovell all finished tied for third at 76. Gainesville's Turner Edmondson and Nick Green and North Hall's JT Chester were tied for sixth at 77.
In the girls tournament, North Hall extended a big first-day lead as they have won back-to-back titles (2019) for the first time (the 2020 tournament was not held).
The Lady Trojans' Mikayla Dubnik won the individual title with a 1-under 71 total. That was enough to hold off teammate Lyric Sanford, who finished second with an 83. Lydia Pils of Lakeview was third at 86, Gainesville's Karina Collins was fourth (87), and North Hall's MaKayla Jones was fifth at 90.
