Drivers in Lumpkin County were warned to look out for elk today, quite a surprise for the North Georgia area. A statement from the Lumpkin County Government said that elk were on the loose in the area of the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve on Old Dahlonega Highway.
Lumpkin County Animal Shelter staff, the DNR and the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve and Zoo staff were all working together to get the elk contained.
The statement warned drivers that the animals are large and could pose a hazard to vehicles.
If anyone sees one of these animals on the loose, report the sighting to the Animal Shelter at 706-867-7297. After normal business hours, passerby are encouraged to call 9-1-1.
