Girls soccer playoffs: Lakeview falls to No. 1 Holy Innocents, 5-3

By AccessWDUN Staff

ATLANTA — A penalty kick before the half seemed to be the turning point as the Lakeview Academy girls soccer team fell to No. 1 ranked Holy Innocents, 5-3, on the road Monday.

With the Lady Lions (11-6) up 2-1 with minutes remaining in the opening half, a handball in the box gave the Golden Bears (15-1) a penalty kick opportunity and they converted to tie the game, 2-2.

From there, Holy Innocents outscored the Lady Lions, 3-1, to capture the Class A Private second-round playoff win.

"The girls played their hearts out today against a much bigger and stronger opponent who was very physical," Head Coach Nathan Wallace said. "We didn't back down and that takes a lot of strength and determination. We didn't let the presence of the #1 ranked team scare us. We are really proud of the girls and their efforts tonight and this season."

Lakeview's Millie Filson took the pass from Ella Grace Leek and booted it through the upper left corner of the goal to give the Lady Lions the early lead, 1-0. A few minutes later, Lakeview extended its lead when McKenna Filson nailed a right-footed shot into the upper right corner of the goal. Millie Filson dished the assist to her sister to put the Lady Lions up 2-0 in the first half.

The Golden Bears scored their first goal off a strong header from University of Georgia-commit Rachel Suttle, cutting the Lady Lions' lead, 2-1.

In the second half, Holy Innocents scored a quick goal off a corner kick by UGA-commit Caroline Belisle to give the Golden Bears a 3-2 advantage.

Lakeview was able to score a late goal when Hannah Perkins crossed in a free-kick that Millie Filson headed into the goal.

Lakeview goalkeeper Celia Wilson-Patino had 18 saves in goal.
