Over 200 vaccinated at Pilgrim's Pride poultry processing plant

Medical assistant staff and volunteer providers with Good News Clinics vaccinated 217 employees at the Pilgrim’s Pride poultry processing plant Thursday. Georgia Poultry Federation President and Good News Clinics Board Member Mike Giles said that offering the vaccine at work is aimed at making it more accessible and convenient for full-time employees.

Eight vaccine stations were set up throughout the facility and distribution took just under three hours. Another clinic will reportedly take place in mid-April to administer second doses. READ MORE

Hall County School District launches program of choice for students looking at healthcare careers

Officials with Howard E. Ivester Early College in Hall County recently presented goals for a new healthcare program of choice to members of the Hall County School Board.

The new program, dubbed the Ivester Healthcare Scholars Program of Choice, is aimed at giving high school juniors and seniors interested in healthcare careers more specialized and personal direction. According to Howard E. Ivester Early College Dean Michelle Hood, students in the program will be able to participate in mentorships, internships and research to determine which aspect of the healthcare profession best suits them.

Partners in the new program of choice will include Brenau University, the University of North Georgia and Lanier Technical College. READ MORE

Young Harris College to return to in-person classes

Young Harris College is now among the local colleges and universities scheduled to return to in-person learning in the fall. The college will not require students to be vaccinated before returning to campus unless required by state or federal regulations, but members of the campus community are strongly encouraging students to get the vaccine.

Synergy Health of Hiawassee offered a COVID-19 vaccination clinic on the Young Harris campus Thursday, with more vaccine clinics expected to take place in the coming weeks. READ MORE

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper hosts 11th annual Sweep the Hooch event

The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper hosted its 11th annual Sweep the Hooch event Saturday. The initiative, aimed at removing trash from the Chattahoochee River and its surrounding tributaries, spanned a total of eight clean-up sites in the region from the start of the river in the Chattahoochee National Forest to Lake Lanier.

Approximately 1,100 volunteers throughout the state signed up for the event this year, with about 200 located in the headwaters region. One of the main focuses of the event was on removing large items such as plastic and styrofoam from Lake Lanier. READ MORE

Northside Forsyth named one of world’s best hospitals

The Forsyth County campus of Northside Hospital was recently recognized by Newsweek as one of the World’s Best Hospitals.

Two thousand hospitals spanning more than twenty-five countries were recognized in the report for reasons including distinguished physicians, top-notch nursing care and state-of-the-art technology, according to a release from the Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce. Northside Hospital Forsyth was one of only seven Georgia hospitals to be recognized. READ MORE
