One man was killed and another was critically injured in a car crash Thursday morning on GA 51 south of Gillespie Road in Banks County.
The crash happened at about 7 a.m. and involved a Ford F-250 and a Mack CV700, SFC D.A. Rathel with the Georgia State Patrol said.
Rathel said Wesley Allen Atwood, 34, of Homer was driving the F-250 northbound on GA 51, while Gerald Justine Poss, 35, of Demorest was driving the Mack southbound on GA 51.
The F-250 reportedly crossed the centerline and struck the Mack head-on. Rathel said the F-250 came to an uncontrolled final rest on the east side of GA 51, and the Mack came to rest on the west side of GA 51.
Atwood was pronounced dead at the scene. Poss was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in critical condition.
Rathel said Atwood had not been wearing a restraint at the time of the accident but was not ejected. Both drivers had to be extracted from their vehicles by the Banks County Fire Department.
It was raining and dark outside at the time of the accident. Rathel said drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be a factor in the accident.
